PM&DC moved seats between KPK colleges. Does that change my merit position?

Asked by SalikStaffNew1 answerAnswered

I read that Saidu, Bacha Khan and Gomal were raised to 150 seats, and KMU asked PM&DC to keep last year's allocation. If the total is the same, does any of this affect me?

Yes, if the seats moved between the colleges you ranked. The province's total barely changed, but the distribution did, and merit is decided per college, not per province.

What PM&DC raised for the 2026-27 session:

    • Saidu Medical College, Swat: 115 to 150
    • Bacha Khan Medical College, Mardan: 100 to 150
    • Gomal Medical College, D. I. Khan: 115 to 150

Officials told Dawn the province holds 1,580 MBBS and BDS seats, that 1,435 students were admitted in 2025-26 and 1,450 in 2026-27, so the net rise was 15 admissions. KMU asked PM&DC to retain the previous year's distribution because the change landed while the process was running.

Why that matters to an individual candidate: a seat that moves from one college to another does not change how many students are admitted. It changes where the last admitted student in each college sits. A college that lost 35 seats closes higher than it did last year, and a college that gained closes lower, for the same applicant.

What to do: compare your aggregate with this year's lists for the colleges on your preference list, not with the number you saw for that college last year. KMU's published schedule put the final merit list on 12 November and category placement from 16 to 21 November. The merit list page shows which of those KMU has actually published.

The seat redistribution news entry has the letter and the numbers, and the seat count guide explains why a province's total is not your competition.
