A parent's guide to the MDCAT and medical admission
A parent's guide to the MDCAT, the admission year and the costs that matter. What to pay for, what to ignore, and how to support without pressure.

Key takeaways
- The MDCAT is 180 questions in 180 minutes, with Biology carrying 81 marks.
- The provincial admitting university runs the application and merit process, not the school.
- Pay official fees, not seat agents, and check every number against the current prospectus.
- Protect sleep and one non-study activity; a bad mock is usually a timing problem.
- PMDC has not announced a 2027 date. July 2027 is a planning assumption.
Your child has chosen medicine. The next year will involve one national test, several provincial forms and a merit list that decides where they can study. You do not need to master the syllabus. You need to understand the process, protect the study time and keep the pressure manageable.
What the MDCAT measures
The MDCAT is one paper of 180 multiple-choice questions, worth 180 marks, with 180 minutes on the clock. It tests Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English and Logical Reasoning at higher-secondary level. It does not test clinical skill, and it does not replace the FSc result.
The Pakistan Medical and Dental Council sets the format. Each provincial admitting university publishes its own registration arrangements and test-day instructions. That split matters. PMDC decides what the test is. UHS, DUHS, KMU, NUMS, the Balochistan admitting university or the Federal authority decides how candidates in that province register and where they sit.
The 2026 paper was held on Sunday, 20 September 2026, after a delay from 16 August 2026. PMDC has not announced a 2027 date. July 2027 is a planning assumption in our study planner, not an official date. Do not build a family calendar around it until PMDC publishes a notice.
The paper in numbers
The subject split is fixed at 81 Biology questions, 45 Chemistry, 36 Physics, 9 English and 9 Logical Reasoning. That is 180 questions in 180 minutes, or one minute per question on average.
Biology is the largest block at almost half the paper. English and Logical Reasoning together carry 18 marks. Many students treat those 18 marks as spare time for Biology. That is a poor trade. They are quick marks for a student who has practised the formats.
The answer sheet is separate from the question booklet. Check the current instruction sheet for the rules on marking, erasing and banned items. Those rules can change between sessions.
The admission year, step by step
The order is usually the same, even when the dates move. Registration for the MDCAT opens first. The test follows. Results are released by the testing body. Each admitting university then opens its college application window, checks documents and publishes merit lists. A selected candidate pays the college fee and reports to the college.
The public and private routes use the same MDCAT, but they do not use the same application form. Public seats are allocated through the provincial admitting university. Private colleges may run their own portal or join a central private-sector process. Read both sets of instructions. A student who applies only to one route can lose the other by default.
Keep a single folder for documents: CNIC or B-form, domicile, Matric and FSc result cards, MDCAT result, photographs and the paid fee receipts. Scan each document at the size the portal asks for. A missing signature or an unreadable scan can reject an application before merit is considered.
How the aggregate is built
The common published formula is 10% Matric, 40% FSc and 50% MDCAT. Some admitting universities publish a different split or add their own component. The current prospectus is the only version that applies to your child's session.
The formula explains why the MDCAT matters so much. It is half the aggregate, so a strong paper can lift a weak FSc. It cannot erase a very weak FSc, and it cannot rescue an incomplete application. Use our aggregate calculator to see the arithmetic, then check the number against the official prospectus.
One more point. A closing aggregate from last year is a record, not a target. It shows where the last admitted candidate finished in that quota. It does not tell you where the line will fall this year.
What to pay for, and what to skip
Pay for the official test fee, the application processing fee and the documents you cannot produce yourself. Pay for travel to the test centre and a place to stay if the centre is far from home. Pay the college fee only after a formal offer and only through the channel the college names.
The free tier of mymdcat gives your child 500 practice attempts with worked explanations and 10 SAGE questions a day. The MDCAT Pass costs PKR 10,000 for one year. Every 2026 paper is free, in timed or tutor mode. The pre-2026 archive is part of the pass. Compare that with the price of a coaching course before you decide what to buy. See pricing for the current list.
Skip anyone who offers a seat for a cash payment. Skip an agent who asks for original documents before an official offer. Skip a bulk test series that your child will not have time to review. A smaller set of papers, marked and reviewed, is worth more than a large set left unfinished.
What a parent should ignore
Ignore screenshots of other students' scores. Ignore a social media post that says merit will fall or rise. Ignore the parent who says a particular college is finished because of a rumour. None of that is a source you can check.
Use the admitting university's prospectus for rules, the college's own fee schedule for costs and our university directory for recorded fees, seats and merit history. The directory labels an estimated fee as estimated. It does not publish a ranking, and you should not treat it as one.
Support without pressure
Ask about the plan, not the score. A useful question is: what are you studying this week, and what will you review on Friday? A question about the last mock score usually produces either defensiveness or a number that does not help.
Protect sleep. Protect one non-study activity. Keep meals regular. Do not turn the house into an exam hall for eight months. A student who can take one evening off without a lecture is more likely to keep working in the final month. A short walk together can do more than another lecture about the syllabus.
After a bad mock, wait a day before you discuss it. Then ask what the errors were. Many bad mocks are timing problems, not knowledge problems. If sleep, appetite or attendance collapse for more than a week, speak to the school counsellor or a doctor. That is not a study problem.
No score is a verdict on your child. The test ranks candidates for a limited number of seats. It does not measure whether they will be a good doctor.
A checklist for the exam week
Check the admit card, the CNIC or B-form and the photographs. Pack two pens, a pencil, an eraser and a transparent bag if the instructions allow them. Carry water and a light snack for after the paper. Confirm the route and the reporting time, and arrange a backup if the first transport fails.
The night before, do not start a new chapter. Eat a normal meal and sleep. On the day, arrive early, follow the invigilator and keep the answer sheet flat. If something goes wrong at the centre, ask the invigilator to record it before you leave.
After the paper, let it go. The result is out of your hands. The next task is the college application, and that is a family administrative job, not another exam.
Common questions
Is the 2027 MDCAT date confirmed?
No. PMDC has not announced a 2027 date. July 2027 is our planning assumption for the study planner. Check the PMDC website before you book travel or leave.
Should we pay for a coaching academy?
Not by default. Start with a diagnostic paper and a small set of reviewed questions. Pay for teaching only if your child cannot fix a subject alone. The free tier gives 500 practice attempts with worked explanations.
What if the MDCAT score is lower than expected?
Check the aggregate first. The MDCAT is half the total in most provinces, so a weak paper does not always close every route. Then read the repeater rules and the current prospectus. Do not pay a seat agent.
Do private colleges accept a lower score?
Private colleges still use the MDCAT and the provincial or institutional merit process. Their closing aggregates can differ from public colleges. Check the current prospectus and the college fee schedule; do not rely on last year.
How many practice attempts does the free tier include?
The free tier includes 500 lifetime practice attempts, with worked explanations, and 10 SAGE questions a day. The 2026 past papers are free and do not use the 500 attempts.
