History and heritage

The medical school that became LUMHS opened in 1881 inside the Civil Hospital in Hyderabad. 16 It was the first medical institution in the province of Sindh. 1 After Sindh left the Bombay Presidency, the school rose to medical college status under Bombay University. 1 Sir Francis Moody, the first Governor of Sindh, inaugurated the college. 1 The first batch had 45 students and included one Muslim woman. 1

The college moved to Karachi on 10 December 1945 and took the name Dow Medical College. 1 The government opened a new college at the same Hyderabad premises in 1951. 1 It named the new college Liaquat Medical College after the first Prime Minister of Pakistan. 1 The University of Sindh gave affiliation to the college. 1

Liaquat Medical College shifted to its campus at Jamshoro in 1963. 1 The college added the Dental Section, which teaches the BDS degree, in the same year. 16 It also started postgraduate courses in 1963. 1 The institute now offers MSc degrees in all clinical dental disciplines. 1

The college expanded its postgraduate courses over the following decades. 1 It gained the status of a postgraduate medical institute in 1989. 1 It became a recognised training institution for FCPS and MCPS in medicine, surgery, dentistry and allied sciences. 1

The Governor of Sindh promulgated the Liaquat University Ordinance on 20 January 2001. 1 The ordinance upgraded the college to Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences. 16 The university calls itself the first public sector medical university of the country. 1 Our dataset records the university as a public sector institution in Sindh.

The prospectus lists the Institute of Dentistry among the constituent institutes of LUMHS. 1 The list also carries Bilawal Medical College, the college at Thatta and schools of nursing, physiotherapy and pharmacy. 1 Bilawal Medical College opened in Jamshoro in 2016 for male students. 6 Liaquat Institute of Medical and Health Sciences in Thatta taught its first batch in 2024-25. 1 The list also names the Institute of Bio-Medical Engineering and Technology. 1

The university produced more than 1,200 specialists with postgraduate qualifications. 1 Our dataset records that the faculty serves patients from Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas and lower Sindh. The dental institute trains surgeons for public and private practice in the region.

What the merit trend shows

Our dataset records two open-merit closing aggregates for the BDS programme. Both values carry the open-merit label. The closing aggregate was 78.9% in 2024 and 85.2% in 2025. The dataset holds no values for 2022 and 2023, so the chart shows a two-year trend. A reader should treat the missing years as absent data and not as a fall in merit.

Sindh's prospectus computes the aggregate as 50% MDCAT, 40% HSSC and 10% SSC. 1 The formula rounds the final figure to five decimals. 1 A tie in the aggregate goes to the older candidate. 1

The MDCAT total changed across years through 210, 200 and 180 marks. Compare the yearly figures with that scale change in mind. The 2025 figure sits well above the 2024 figure on our chart. The current MDCAT uses the 180-mark scale.
