History

The DUHS pages trace the college to a medical school in Hyderabad in 1881 and record a move to Karachi in 1946. 1 They name Dr. Hemandas R. Wadhwani and Sir Hugh Dow among the figures who shaped the college. 1

Sir Hugh Dow served as the Governor of Sindh. 5 He laid the foundation stone on 10 December 1945 at the site of the old NJV School. 5 On 31 December 1945, a group of 45 students moved from Hyderabad to Karachi, and one of them was a female Muslim student. 5

The college first worked inside the old NJV High School building on Mission Road. 5 A new building opened in November 1946. 5

The college affiliated with the University of Bombay until 1947, then with the University of Sindh and the University of Karachi. 53 It later became a constituent institute of Dow University of Health Sciences. 13

The Sindh prospectus counts over 22,000 graduates of the college. 3 It records about 1,750 students and more than 250 faculty members. 3 The DUHS pages give alumni counts that range from about 9,000 to over 21,000. 1

The campus holds a high-fidelity simulation lab, smart classrooms, skill and anatomy labs, a digital library and a Health Professional Education Centre. 3 The prospectus also records five lecture halls, two auditoria and a day-care centre. 3

What the merit trend shows

Our dataset records Dow MBBS open-merit aggregates of 88.40% for 2022, 89.55% for 2023, 85.20% for 2024 and 87.44% for 2025. The 2025 self-finance aggregate is 84.45%.

Every aggregate follows the Sindh formula: 50% MDCAT, 40% HSSC and 10% SSC. 3

Compare the sessions with care. The MDCAT scale moved from 210 marks to 200 marks and then to 180 marks across these years. 8 One percentage point is not one raw mark in every row. The 2024 row sits 4.35 points below 2023, and the 2025 row recovers to 87.44%. Read the four open-merit rows as a range of about four points, not as one cut-off.
