History
The idea of a medical teaching institution in Multan dates to 1945, when Dr. Mohammad Jamal Bhutta raised it. 2 Punjab then held one medical college, King Edward Medical College in Lahore, and Muslim students held a small share of its seats. 2 After Pakistan formed in 1947, the need for more doctors grew. The Government of Punjab then decided to build a medical college and hospital at Multan. 2
On 31 December 1950, Governor Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar announced the decision at a public meeting in Lahnge Khan’s Garden beside the Civil Hospital Multan. 2 The college took his name. 2 The people of Multan gave Rs. 1.815 million for the construction, and the sum later rose to Rs. 3.3 million. 2
Sardar Abdur Rab Nishtar laid the foundation stone on 28 April 1951, and the UHS prospectus dates the college to 29 April 1951. 23 Construction started on 10 July 1951 at the south west corner of the Anatomy department. 2 Habib J. Somjee designed the college building, and Murat Khan designed the hospital building. 2 Dr. Muhammad Jamal Bhutta served as the founder principal. 2
The first batch held 52 students, and the first MBBS batch graduated in May 1956. 2 The university now teaches over 325 students each year. 2 Nishtar Hospital began with 80 beds on 1 October 1953. 2 The hospital now holds over 1700 beds, as the university page and the prospectus record. 23
Affiliations moved with time. The college first worked with the University of the Punjab, then with Bahauddin Zakariya University from 1975, then with UHS from January 2003. 5
The campus added units over the decades. 2 A dental section opened in 1974, and the Nishtar Institute of Dentistry followed in 2009. 2 The Pakistan Health Research Center started on 14 November 1979. 2 The nursing college dates to 2005, and the Pak-Italian Modern Burn Unit held its inauguration in December 2005. 2 The College of Allied Health Sciences received approval on 23 June 2019. 2
The Provincial Assembly of Punjab passed the Nishtar Medical University Act in September 2017, and the college became a university. 5 The university page and the prospectus mark the upgrade in May 2017. 23 PMC permitted the university to run its undergraduate and postgraduate examinations on 19 November 2020. 5

What the merit trend shows
The dataset records NMU MBBS open-merit aggregates of 89.05% for 2022, 90.20% for 2023, 90.45% for 2024 and 94.1455% for 2025. The BDS figures at the dental institute move from 86.10% in 2022 to 88.20% in 2024 and hold the same mark for 2025.

Compare the sessions with care. The MDCAT scale moved from 210 marks to 200 marks and then to 180 marks across these years. One percentage point is not one raw mark in every row.
