History and heritage

The story starts before partition. The Punjab Medical Education and Relief Society formed in 1941 with 100 founder members. 1 Teaching began at Balak Ram Medical College in 1942 with a batch of 50 students, and the batch held 44 men and 6 women. 1 The college carried the name of a son of Sir Ganga Ram. 1

The Queen's Road bungalow came from Mrs. Balak Ram and her son L. Sri Ram. 1 Col. D. H. Rai served as the first principal of the college. 1 Shrimati Sarojini Naidu opened the Anatomy and Physiology blocks on 6 January 1946. 1 The Anatomy Hall carries the name of R. B. Dr. Beli Ram. 1

Partition in 1947 stopped the work, and the college stayed abandoned. 1 Prof. Shujaat Ali then proposed a medical institution for women doctors to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. 2 The Father of the Nation approved the association of the institution with his sister, Mohtarma Fatima Jinnah. 2 Prof. Shujaat Ali became the first principal of the new college. 2

The UHS prospectus records the college establishment year as 1948. 2 The first batch held 39 students, and that batch graduated in 1953. 2 Prime Minister Khawaja Nazim-ud-Din formally inaugurated the college on 31 March 1949. 2 The prospectus calls it the first women medical institution of the country. 2

The intake now stands at 300 students a year. 2 Around 13,000 doctors graduated from the institution in its first 75 years. 2 The university home page reports 13,000 alumni and 2,250 current students. 5

The Government of Punjab awarded university status on 1 July 2015. 21 The Higher Education Commission granted accreditation and a regular NOC on 23 December 2017. 1 The teaching hospitals hold accreditation from the Pakistan Medical Commission and the College of Physicians and Surgeons Pakistan (CPSP). 1 At the 2015 upgrade, the principal became the vice chancellor. 6

The university now offers postgraduate MS, MD, M.Phil and PhD routes and runs a College of Nursing with Post RN and BSN programmes. 5 Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, Mother & Child Hospital and Government Teaching Hospital Shahdara appear among its affiliated institutes. 45

What the merit trend shows

FJMU MBBS open-merit aggregates moved from 88.91% in 2022 to 90.18% in 2023, then to 90.10% in 2024 and 93.8136% in 2025. The series rises after 2023 and gains about 4.9 points across the four sessions.

UHS builds the aggregate from three parts: 10% of SSC marks, 40% of HSSC marks and 50% of MDCAT marks. 2 The final figure is rounded to four decimal places. 2 The prospectus works two examples, one on a 200-mark MDCAT and one on a 180-mark MDCAT. 2 Compare sessions with care, because an equal percentage does not mean an equal raw score.

UHS runs separate preference lists for female and male candidates, and FJMU sits on the female list. 2 PMDC names the college as a women-only institution. 7

Common questions

How do I apply to FJMU?

You apply through the UHS public MBBS portal, not to FJMU directly. Register on public-mbbs.uhs.edu.pk, add FJMU to your preference list, upload your documents and pay the Rs. 2,000 processing fee. Applications ran from 7 November to 21 November 2025 for the last cycle. 23

What MDCAT score do I need?

The 2025-26 cycle needs at least 55% in MDCAT for MBBS. UHS accepted MDCAT of 2023, 2024 or 2025 for that cycle. HSSC Pre-Medical must stand at 60% or above, and open merit needs a Punjab domicile. Check the current prospectus for your session. 2

How is the aggregate calculated?

UHS counts 10% of SSC marks, 40% of HSSC marks and 50% of MDCAT marks. The final aggregate is rounded to four decimal places. The prospectus works one example on a 200-mark MDCAT and another on a 180-mark MDCAT. Check the merit calculation annexure for the full formula. 2

Is FJMU open to male students?

No. PMDC lists the college as a women-only institution, and the prospectus records Fatima Jinnah Medical College as the only public medical college without co-education. UHS runs separate preference lists for female and male candidates, and FJMU appears only on the female list. 72

Does FJMU offer hostels?

Yes. The college hostel has eight blocks and space for 1,200 students, and it sits within walking distance of the university. The prospectus lists eight hostels for female students. Sports facilities, a canteen and a transport service also run inside the campus area. 2

MDCAT test score scales changed over time (210 in 2021, 200 in 2022, 180 from 2025). The MDCAT weightage in the aggregate formula (typically 50% MDCAT, 40% HSSC, 10% SSC) has stayed stable across cycles we cover. Closing merit numbers between cycles may not be directly comparable.
