History and heritage

Loralai district sits in the north-east of Balochistan and was formerly called Bori. Two hospitals, two rural healthcare centres and 28 basic health units serve its 400,000 inhabitants, as the prospectus records. 1

The government judged those facilities short of the district demand. The prospectus states that a medical college would reverse the healthcare situation and give tertiary care at the door step of a remote area. 1

The Government of Balochistan notified the college on 24 February 2017 in notification No. SO-III (H) 2-1/2017/4048-57. The same notification covered Jhalawan Medical College and Mekran Medical College. 1

In March 2018 the deputy commissioner inspected the completed classrooms, library, auditorium, laboratory and staff room. The project director reported that the admin block, laboratories, museum and hostel were complete. The college recruited twelve teaching faculty members, and 30 more were due to join. 6

The prospectus and the college site both record 2018 as the establishment year. Our dataset records 2018. 15 Classes started soon after the admissions that year. 6

BUMHS began its admitting role with the 2018-19 session under Act No. VII of 2017. LMC runs inside that system from its 2018 opening. 2 The prospectus records 396 enrolled students, a staff of 94 senior faculty and 26 demonstrators, and Prof. Dr. Bashir Ullah as principal. 1

The Teaching Hospital Loralai is the attached hospital of the college, as the prospectus and the college site record. 15 Our dataset records 500 clinical beds at the hospital.

The prospectus states that clinical training and education run in the attached teaching hospitals of each college. 1 Clinical work grows from the basic departments on campus into the wards of the district hospital.

The college frames the hospital as a tertiary care site for a district that long lacked specialists. The prospectus records that the college would introduce new healthcare facilities and medical expertise in Loralai. 1

Campus and facilities

The campus covers a 16-acre existing building, with 150 acres marked for the new campus, as the prospectus records. 15 Our dataset lists the academic wings, digital library, student residencies and anatomy dissection room as core facilities.

The 2018 inspection covered the classrooms, library, auditorium, laboratory, staff room, admin block, museum and hostel, all reported complete at the time. 6 The prospectus records two hostels for students. 1

The postal address sits at Lashti Killi near the Commissioner Office, also described as Main Quetta Road on the college site. 4

The college site links its approvals to the PMDC public medical colleges list. 4 Our dataset also records a WHO World Directory listing, ECFMG eligibility and CPSP accreditation.

Student life

The academic year runs from 1 March to 30 November, with exam preparation in December, exams in January and annual holidays in February. 14 Professional exams run on a 100% multiple choice question pattern. 4 BUMHS posts examination notices for the provincial colleges each session. 8

Students share two hostels, common rooms and the sports space of a small district town. 1 The prospectus sets a dress code of a blue shirt with white shalwar for girls and a white shirt with grey trousers for boys. 1

The principal leads a welfare fund committee that covers student needs such as emergencies and hostel costs. 1 The town gives students direct contact with the healthcare needs of a district of 400,000 people. 1
