History and heritage

The story starts with the Amin-u Din Medical School, which opened in Balochistan in 1952 and closed after seven years. Balochistan became a separate province in 1970. In March 1971 the province agreed in principle to open a medical college at Quetta. 1

In 1972 the Government of Pakistan formally decided to set up Bolan Medical College at Quetta as a federally funded project. 1 The college formed during the chief ministership of Ataullah Mengal, and education minister Mir Gul Khan Nasir backed it. 6

Clinical classes started at Sandeman Provincial Hospital while a new building rose. Basic classes ran in an acquired para-medical school building. The college later moved to its main building and the attached BMCH hospital. 1

A branch of the Pakistan Medical Research Council works at the college and started in 1979. A PM&DC sub-office functions at Quetta and started in October 2004. BDS classes started in 1985. 1

By the 2025-26 prospectus, 47 batches of about 7,969 students graduated from BMC, and 697 BDS doctors qualified from the dental section. 1 The JICA gave a grant of 488 million yen in 1995 and a new building opened in 1996. 6

BUMHS grew out of this college. The provincial assembly passed the BUMHS bill on 11 December 2017. The governor assented on 20 December 2017, and the gazette carried Act No. VII of 2017 on 22 December 2017. The first vice-chancellor took charge on 1 August 2018. 2 BMC now works as a constituent college of BUMHS. 2
