Senate call for overhaul
The Senate Standing Committee on National Health Services on 9 October 2024 called for a wholesale overhaul of the MDCAT system and private-medical-college fee structures. The committee's recommendations included:
- A single national MDCAT conducted centrally by PM&DC (which has since been implemented for the 2026 cycle).
- A cap on private medical college tuition, with the cap set against the cost of delivering the program.
- A transparent formula for the foreign quota (15% of seats, since formalised by PM&DC on 31 October 2025).
