Biology

Kingdom Plantae

4,809 words, 10 sections

The official PMDC syllabus table does not name this chapter at all, and no learning outcome maps to it. The papers do not care: 114 distinct questions have been asked across 49 official papers between 2000 and 2024 by six boards, inside the 81 marks Biology carries, with 561 live questions on this chapter in the practice bank and a mean item difficulty of 1.9. The load is uneven, with Plant Reproduction and Seeds at 44 distinct questions, Gymnosperms and Angiosperms at 34, Specialized Plant Adaptations at 29 and Inflorescence Types at 7. A student who has mastered this chapter can place any plant they are shown into its group, say which generation is dominant in its life cycle, and work the ploidy arithmetic of double fertilisation without hesitating. Look for the material in the Diversity Among Plants chapter of the textbooks (chapter 8 in the Sindh book) rather than hunting for a heading called Kingdom Plantae.

Every plant life cycle on this syllabus runs on one hinge: meiosis happens in the sporophyte, and only there. The diploid sporophyte makes haploid spores, a spore germinates by mitosis into the haploid gametophyte, the gametophyte makes gametes by mitosis, and the fusion of two gametes gives a zygote that grows by mitosis back into a sporophyte. Because the two phases look nothing alike, the alternation is heteromorphic, and the exam asks which of the two is dominant in each group rather than asking you to draw the cycle.

The dominance shifts once across the whole kingdom. In bryophytes the gametophyte is the conspicuous, photosynthetic, free-living plant and the sporophyte hangs off it. From the pteridophytes upward the sporophyte is the free-living plant and the gametophyte shrinks. In angiosperms it shrinks so far that it is entirely dependent, which is why the smallest gametophyte in the chapter belongs to the flowering plants and why a spore is always described as giving rise to a gametophyte and never to a sporophyte.
